Tongkat Ali: The Evidence on Testosterone, Stress & Male Performance

March 8, 2025 ยท 3 min read

What Is Tongkat Ali?

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a medicinal tree native to Southeast Asia โ€” Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Also known as Longjack or Malaysian ginseng, it has been used for centuries as a tonic for male vitality.

In recent years, it's become one of the most popular supplements for men seeking to naturally support testosterone levels. And unlike many testosterone supplements with weak evidence, Tongkat Ali has some reasonably solid clinical backing.

The Mechanism โ€” How It May Work

Tongkat Ali doesn't directly add testosterone. Instead, it appears to work through multiple pathways:

  1. Reduces SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) โ€” freeing up bound testosterone into bioavailable free testosterone
  2. Reduces cortisol โ€” the stress hormone that suppresses testosterone production
  3. May stimulate LH secretion โ€” the pituitary hormone that signals the testes to produce more testosterone
  4. Contains eurycomanone โ€” the primary bioactive compound with quassinoid activity

What Clinical Research Shows

A well-regarded 2012 study on 63 men with late-onset hypogonadism found that 200mg of standardized Tongkat Ali extract daily for one month increased testosterone levels in 90% of participants. Mean testosterone increased from deficient to normal range.

A 2013 study on cyclists showed that 400mg daily for 5 weeks significantly reduced cortisol and improved testosterone:cortisol ratio โ€” a key marker of recovery and anabolic state.

A 2021 meta-analysis of 11 studies concluded Tongkat Ali modestly but significantly improved testosterone levels, particularly in men with low baseline levels.

Standardization Matters Enormously

Tongkat Ali root powder without standardization has very little evidence. Look for:

  • LJ100 โ€” patented extract standardized to eurypeptides and glycosaponins, used in most clinical studies
  • Physta โ€” another standardized extract with clinical backing
  • Minimum 200:1 extract ratio

Cheap root powder supplements are largely ineffective.

Dosage

  • Standard dose: 200โ€“400mg of standardized extract daily
  • Timing: Morning with or without food
  • Cycling: Optional โ€” some users cycle 5 days on, 2 off; or 8 weeks on, 2 weeks off
  • Noticeable effects typically begin at 2โ€“4 weeks

Who Benefits Most

Tongkat Ali shows strongest effects in men with:

  • Low-normal testosterone (300โ€“450 ng/dL range)
  • High stress and elevated cortisol
  • Age 40+
  • Intense training with poor recovery

Men with genuinely low testosterone (hypogonadism) should consult a doctor โ€” TRT may be more appropriate than supplements.

Stacks Well With

  • Ashwagandha โ€” complementary stress-hormone reduction
  • Zinc โ€” essential cofactor for testosterone synthesis
  • Fadogia Agrestis โ€” increasingly popular combination (though Fadogia has less research)

Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated. Reported side effects at high doses:

  • Insomnia or restlessness (don't take in the evening)
  • Mild increase in body temperature
  • Not recommended during pregnancy

Bottom Line

Tongkat Ali is one of the better-evidenced natural testosterone supporters โ€” particularly the LJ100 standardized extract. Best results in men with stress-suppressed or age-related testosterone decline. Not a replacement for TRT in true hypogonadism, but a meaningful natural option for optimization.
